Diverticulitis Clear Liquids Diet

Clear liquids diet for diverticulitis

If your symptoms of diverticulitis are severe, a clear liquid diet is highly recommended. Going without solid food gives the colon a chance to rest and heal. Your doctor may recommend a clear liquid diet immediately after surgery until your digestive system regains the strength to absorb and digest fiber. A clear liquid diet is typically followed by a low residue (or low fiber) diet.  The clear liquids diet therapy should be followed only for two or three days.

The following foods are allowed in a clear liquid diet:

  • Plain water, clear sodas, tea or coffee with no cream
  • Fruit juices without pulp, such as apple or grape juice
  • Bouillon, broths, strained vegetable broth
  • Plain gelatin
  • Jelly (without seeds), honey are also acceptable
  • Ice pops without bits of fruit or fruit pulp

Here’s a typical clear liquid diet daily meal plan.

Breakfast:

  • One glass fruit juice
  • One glass water
  • One cup broth
  • One bowl gelatin

Snack:

  • One cup coffee or Calming Blends tea (without cream)
  • One bowl gelatin

Lunch:

  • One glass fruit juice
  • One glass water
  • One cup broth
  • One bowl gelatin

Dinner:

  • One cup juice or water
  • One cup broth
  • One bowl gelatin
  • One cup coffee or Calming Blends tea (without cream)

      Hi Johnny,

Thank you for your interest in Calming Blends tea. We recommend drinking the tea up to 3 times daily. It is not necessary to drink it with or without food. Some people like to drink it before breakfast, then another cup in the afternoon and then once before bedtime.

Hi Johnny. It’s really up to you. It’s not required to drink the tea with food. You can start with 2 cups a day and then gradually increase to 3 cups per day.

      Hi Joanna,
The Calming Blends tea does not come in tea bags. It is a loose leaf tea that comes in a resealable pouch for freshness.

I just found your site. Thankfully. I have been on a really high fiber diet for years. Rarely peel anything. A short time ago I har a loose stool along with a toilet bowl full if bright red blood. After fishing in my brain as to what I had eaten to have caused the color I was seeing I realizeded it was blood. I ignored it, sort of for until a few days after when I had a repeat of the blood bowl movement on Monday morning. Called Dr. and nurse ordered me to go to emergency room ASAP.

Rectal examination left me with referrals to an internist and to a gastroenterogly group. It is Saturday morning. I called each reference twice and not a word or appointment yet. When I arrived home from the hospital, my daughter who lives next to me had all ready mapped out a plan with the only information above. I am an a much reduced low fiber diet and up to this moment, 3 AM Saturday, have not had a bloody stool. If I do, will start adjusting what I am currently eating. If not I will add slowly more reduced fiber foods to present foods. Your wonderful site will be a great aid immediately and in the future. God bless. Thank you. Carol Ramage. 84 this June 5th, 2022. I am currently not able to receive emails but that will be fixed in a few days.
